Choosing the Correct 32A Rated PDU Many of our standard PDU can be fitted with a 32A IEC309 (BS4343/ Commando) style plug. However when we have a PDU with a 32A IEC309 plug and either IEC 60320 C13 10A or C19 16A sockets then they need protecting by either circuit breaker(s) or fuse(s) with a maximum rating of 10A or 16A. We can achieve this in a number of ways. The
most cost effective solution is to fit a single fuse or circuit breaker to
the PDU with a suitable rating for the sockets eg 10A for C13 and 16A for
C19 sockets. The disadvantage of this approach is that you can not draw
the full 32A from the supply. In many applications this is not a problem,
as the equipment connected to the PDU does not draw the current of the
fuse/circuit breaker. This is usually the case where there is a 32A socket
provided, so the PDU needs a 32A plug, but the connected equipment does
not need 32A in total. Another
option is to protect banks of sockets with suitably rated fuses or circuit
breakers. Many of our PDU have three (or more) banks of C13 sockets, each
protected by a 10A fuse. This is the most cost effective solution where
the full 32A can be drawn. The
final method is individually protected sockets, either fuse or circuit
breaker. This solution has many
advantages, including being able to draw the full 32A from the PDU
and in the event of a fault, only the faulty equipment is disconnected
leaving other connected equipment operational. The main disadvantages are
cost and size (the PDU are usually physically larger to fit the
fuses/circuit breakers), but the advantages often outweigh the
disadvantages. All the PDU below can be fitted with a 32A plug and show the maximum current that can be drawn from them |
