| Question | Answer |
| Why is there no setting for a gateway address or a subnet mask? | Since the Olson Remote Power Monitoring PDU is just a server, it only responds to requests from clients. Therefore there is no need to set a default gateway or subnet mask. The PDU will always respond to the IP address (or through the same gateway) from which the request was received. |
| Can it be used with a NAT router? How do I connect the unit to the internet? | You can use the Olson Remote Power Monitoring PDU with a NAT router. For incoming requests, most NAT routers will allow incoming IP packets on (say) port 80 (HTTP) or 161 (SNMP) etc. to be sent to a specific IP address on the local network, i.e. the PDU address. This mapping is usually done using the router set-up/admin functions. |
| My ISP does not provide a static IP address. Can I connect it to the internet and how do I determine its web address? |
Yes, you will be able to access the Olson
Remote Power Monitoring PDU over the Internet with this set-up but it is not
ideal. Dynamic IP addresses are fine for clients but any server equipment
should really have a static IP address. This is because your IP address
could change each time the connection to your ISP is re-established. The IP address allocated by the ISP and used on the WAN side of your router can usually be determined by looking at the router status information, often accessible via a web browser from a computer connected to the local network side of the router, once the connection is up. Alternatively some consumer orientated routers provide a facility for using dynamic dns services such as http://www.dyndns.com There are also many similar services available. |
| Is there any plans to provide alarms via SNMP traps or email? | Yes we have under development alarms via SNMP traps or email. Alarms will be triggered by under and/or over current thresholds. It should be available as a firmware update later in the year. |
| How do I update the firmware of my PDU? |
When there is a firmware update available, we
will post the update together with the programming software on our downloads page.
The current firmware version is 1.05.
The firmware is updated over the network connection. It is possible to update the firmware over the internet, as long as any firewall is suitably configured. |
| How can I reset the KWh reading? | It is not possible for a user to reset the KWh reading. It can only be reset at the factory. |
| Why is the Remote Power Monitoring PDU displaying a higher temperature than a thermometer in the rack? | The temperature sensor is mounted inside the PDU where temperatures will inevitably be higher due to the small amount of heat given off from then remote power monitoring meter. |
